As the state government’s champion of fish and wildlife resources, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is dedicated to protecting the state’s ecosystems, and to providing sustainable recreational and commercial programs. With headquarters located in Olympia, Washington, WDFW supports $4.5 billion in economic activity and more than 60,000 jobs across the state. The agency has 1,500 employees and manages an annual budget of close to $438 million.

WDFW was looking for a budgeting solution to remedy their reliance on Excel spreadsheets and was searching specifically for software that could help them manage their Capital Improvement Plans (CIP). By choosing Questica Budget’s capital module, the agency can prioritize budget planning and spending, approve changes and adjustments to the budget, and generate custom reporting. In addition, OpenBook, our data visualization tool that seamlessly integrates with Questica Budget, will enable WDFW to be open and transparent with its financial data and other information to encourage greater awareness and engagement with Washington citizens about the work they do.

To share their financial information with citizens, WDFW can specify a Geographic Information System location of a capital project in Questica Budget. When Budget is connected to OpenBook, WDFW can use Project Explorer, OpenBook’s data visualization mapping tool, to display capital projects on an interactive map. When the map is shared online, citizens will be able to explore and learn more about each project with descriptive text, informational pop-ups, charts and tables. Information WDFW can add to the map includes the budget, actual spend, funding sources, related documentation, images and video.

With Questica Budget, WDFW now has the ability to create multi-year capital budgets on an annual, quarterly or monthly basis. The agency will be able to identify expenditures and funding sources, as well as have access to end-to-end CIP, budget planning and management.
